I recently watched "His House" on Netflix because a friend of mine said it was scary, so I decided to give it a watch because I love watching horror films!

"His House" was directed by Remi Weekes, and it was aired on Netflix in 2021. Starring Sope Dirisu as Bol Majur and Wunmi Mosaku as Rial Majur, they play a Sudanese couple who seeks refuge in England because of war in their country. When they thought they could have a new life, evil and ominous presence lingers around their new home.
The colours and lighting in the film were rather dull, to bring out the eerie and depressing feeling because the couple lost their daughter on the way to England. Moreover, it also brings out the feeling of discrimination that Rial felt. For example, when she was trying to explore the town, she was discriminated against because of her accent. In addition to that, Bol was told to go back to his country by his neighbor. These scenes of discrimination is a reflection of today's society, where racism is real.
My personal favourite scene from the film was when Rial sat down with a group of women when a war broke out because it gives us a clearer definition of why their house is haunted. What happened was that due to Bol's eagerness to get out of Sudan, he stole someone else's daughter, Nyagak to get on the van to seek refuge. However, Nyagak drowned and this scene told us that they never had a daughter and the 'Apeth' is unhappy because he did not obtain his new life in a fair way.
In terms of scariness and gruesomeness, I personally found the scene where the 'Apeth' trying to wear Bol's skin disgusting because the 'Apeth' had no skin, only the tissue. I think the reason why the 'Apeth' wants to obtain Bol's skin is because it's trying to get something that does not belong to him. Just like how Bol tried to have a new life by stealing Nyagak.
Overall, I'd rate this film an 8/10 for storyline, colours, and actors performance. I could sense the guilt, denial, and anxiety through their expressions. Moreover, the story tells us not to achieve our goals by using unfair methods like Bol.
