Online ESL Tutor Interview

itshannahomg

It's been a year since I've been an online ESL tutor, so I wanted to write this post to share my interview experience and feelings.

I started being a tutor on Engoo.com in April 2020 because of the pandemic and I wanted to earn my own pocket money as a university student. The interviews were really tiring as there were around three to four rounds of it. The first round required me to answer two questions about idioms and vocabularies. Once I passed the first round, I was contacted by a supervisor for an interview. The interview was held on ZOOM and I could select my preferred time so it was very convenient.

During the second round of the interview, I had to take a speed test of my internet to see how good is it and of course, answer questions. The interviewer was from Belgium, and she tested my knowledge on vocabulary, idioms, and grammar. Apart from testing how good is my English, she asked me how did I get to know about this company, why do I want to be a tutor, and what would I do if the student is getting impatient because they could not understand. This is very important because this is a Japanese-based company, so 90% of the students I met were from Japan, and the other 10% are from Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, etc.

Moving on to the third and fourth round, it was a "training" where two mock lessons are conducted. The first lesson was to see how well I could teach, read, and interact with the students. Whereas the second lesson was a free conversation where I had to converse with a student based on their preferred topic. Both of the lessons went smoothly and the interviewers were impressed with me so I got the job!

Throughout this whole year of being an educator, I had multiple chances to talk, teach, and learn from people of different backgrounds. For example, they would tell me about their culture, holiday traditions, traditional food, etc. I had so much fun learning from them and it doesn't feel like a lesson at all because it was a two-way conversation that often gives me a different perspective on different topics.
